Lancing and Sompting Memories

Worthing Odeon (Shortly before demolishion
The Odeon, Worthing, probably taken in the late 1970s. It opened on 24 March 1934, was tripled in 1974, to provide a main
screen (screen 1) with 450 seats, and screens 2 & 3 under the balcony with 120 seats each. It closed in September 1986,
was listed Grade 2 in 1987, but developers appealed and successfully got the building delisted shortly afterwards. It was
subsequently demolished, and a shopping centre now occupies the site.
When Iris worked there around 1948, the staff role was:

Manager: Mr Virgil Dawson
Asst Managers: Mr Cunningham (lived in Findon Valley) and Mr Crooks
Cashier: Miss Dot Tidy
Projectionists: Monty Silsby (now living in Lancing), Henry Sayers, Kenneth Sayers (Iris's husband), Freddy Alford (now living in Anchorage, Alaska) and Johnny Sargeant
Usherettes: Mabs Chipperfield, Millie Parkinson (now living in Wales) and "Butch" Barber
Doormen: Mr Stuart, Mr Lovelace and Mr Marriot (Last known working at Lancing College)

Waitresses: Pearl Silsby (Monty's Wife), Midge Alford (Freddy's wife)
