Prevention is better than cure - AVG 8.5

REBUILDING THE A27

The works consist of replacing the whole section of road, which, at 50 years old, is life expired. Although some reports have indicated that the work will last until Christmas, it is actually scheduled to last until around the end of February, although there will be a three-week break over the Christmas period, when it is intended that the two carriageways will have been largely replaced, leaving the completion of the central reservation and other similar works.

Additional works include improved drainage, to help reduce the flooding problems, new safety fencing, improved lighting, and both carriageways being widened to include cycle lanes. The "kink" in the eastbound carriageway at Lambleys Lane will also be removed.

During the works, there are likely to be some disruptions to traffic flows, including closures, or restrictions, to some junctions. These will be kept to a minimum, and will be advertised in advance.

The Highways Agency also request the co-operation of drivers throughout this period. In particular, to use both lanes for queueing from the Lancing direction, to reduce congestion.

The planned phases are as follows:

  • Phase 1: Closure of overtaking lanes on both carriageways to allow removal of central reservation and crash barriers. Install crossovers to allow contraflows to enable work on existing carriageways.

  • Phase 2a: Closure of westbound carriageway, to enable reconstruction. Southern access to/from Church Lane and Dankton Lane to be closed.

  • Phase 2b: Westbound carriageway at Lyons Farm junction to be closed for reconstrucion. Rest to be fully re-opened. Contraflow only at Lyons Farm.

  • Phase 2c: Lyons Farm junction completed, westbound carriageway at Busticle/Halewick Lane to be closed, with contraflow. There will be no right turn for westbound traffic into Halewick Lane, and no right turn for eastbound traffic into Busticle Lane. The lay-by in this section will also be closed at this time.

  • Phase 2d: Night-time work only. Complete closure of westbound carriageway from Downlands Close to crossover on west side of junction. Restricted access at junction. Left-turn only from Busticle Lane onto A27 (no access from A27 onto Busticle Lane). No access to/from Halewick Lane and westbound A27, but full access eastbound to/from Halewick Lane.

  • Phase 3a: Closure of eastbound carriageway, to enable reconstruction. Southern access to/from Church Lane and Dankton Lane to be closed. Layby by Busticle Lane to be closed.

  • Phase 3b: Eastbound carriageway at Halewick/Busticle Lane to be closed, with contraflow. Rest to be fully re-opened, apart from layby. There will be no access to/from Halewick Lane and westbound carriageway.

  • Phase 3c: Night-time work only. Complete closure of eastbound carriageway from crossover on west side of junction to Downlands Close. Restricted access at junction. No access onto Halewick Lane, access from Halewick Lane only onto A27 eastbound. Full access to/from Busticle Lane A27 westbound only.

  • Phase 3d: Eastbound carriageway at Lyons Farm junction to be closed for reconstrucion. Rest to be fully re-opened. Contraflow only at Lyons Farm.

  • Phase 4: Closures as per phase 1 - both carriageways in use, but with overtaking lanes closed off, to enable completion of works in the central reservation.

Please note, that the above is based of information supplied by Costain. It is intended as a guide, for information purposes only. For any further detailed information, or confirmation, please contact the Highways Agency on 08457 50 40 30. We cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies. Works are also subject to change, dependant upon conditions, and unforseen circumstances. The more observant may have noticed that the original cones and cats-eyes layout suggested the repair of the eastbound carriageway first, not the westbound. This had to be changed due to other necessary works not being completed, and the switch was made so that these works would not be delayed.

Costain will be supplying us with updates every Monday, and these will be posted on the Latest Information page as soon as possible.
